ice window INSTALLATION

An opera titled ‘Ice’, based on Ulla-Lena Lundberg’s book and composed by Jaakko Kuusisto, premiered in 2018. To raise awareness and for the marketing of the piece, we were commissioned to design an installation covering the entire window row of Aleksanterinkatu at Helsinki's Stockmann.

I delved into the libretto and the setting of the work. The piece is set in the archipelago, where the sea, spirits, and spirituality are strongly present. The text of the libretto was so beautiful that we wanted to prominently incorporate excerpts from it and Kuusisto's handwritten notes on the composition into the installation. The pages of the composition and libretto fluttered in the wind like laundry in the archipelago.

Naturally, the soundscape was the music of the piece, and the visual elements included an image of one of the main characters and video footage of the outer archipelago, where the story is set.

The installation was created in collaboration with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, Sivulliset collective and Goljat.
